Digitisation enables the visually impaired to access printed material in digital format by use of screen reading software. This is a 3-way process that begins with scanning of print material, then proofing the scanned pages individually, and finally conversion of text into epub. These epubs are then uploaded to India’s largest online library for the print disabled – Sugamya Pustakalaya

A scanner specially designed for digitization was bought by the Centre and operator trained for the project. 150 books have been digitized at the Centre so far. These books, in Hindi and English for under-graduate and post-graduate students, include subjects like Political Science, History, Hindi, English and general reading books.
A two-day workshop for sighted students was organised in collaboration with SAKSHAM NGO to train them in digitisation to increase the scale of the project. This additional skill opened another avenue for employment for these students too.
